Safety Guidelines
Your safety is our top priority. Follow these guidelines to protect yourself while connecting with others on Desi Connect.
Our Safety Commitment
At Desi Connect, we are committed to creating a safe and respectful environment for the South African Indian community. We employ multiple layers of protection including profile verification systems, automated monitoring for suspicious activity, and a dedicated safety team that reviews reports promptly.
Protect Your Personal Information
- Never share your home address, workplace address, or daily routine with someone you haven't met in person.
- Use your Desi Connect username rather than your full legal name in initial conversations.
- Don't share financial information, bank details, or ID numbers with anyone on the platform.
- Be cautious about sharing your social media profiles too early — they often reveal personal details.
- Use the platform's messaging system rather than switching to personal WhatsApp or phone immediately.
Meeting Safely In Person
- Always meet in a public place for your first several dates — popular restaurants, coffee shops, or shopping centres.
- Tell a trusted friend or family member where you're going, who you're meeting, and when you expect to return.
- Arrange your own transport to and from the date — don't rely on your date for a ride.
- In South Africa, meet during daylight hours for first meetings and choose well-lit, busy venues.
- Trust your instincts — if something feels off, it's okay to leave. Your safety is more important than politeness.
- Consider a video call before meeting in person to verify the person matches their profile.
Recognising Red Flags
- They refuse to video call or make excuses for never being available on camera.
- They ask for money, gifts, or financial help — regardless of the reason or emotional story.
- They pressure you to move the conversation off the platform immediately.
- Their story changes frequently or details don't add up.
- They become aggressive, controlling, or emotionally manipulative when you set boundaries.
- They claim to be in an emergency and need immediate financial assistance.
- They push for a very fast commitment or declare love unusually quickly.
Reporting & Getting Help
- Report suspicious profiles or behaviour immediately using the report button on any profile.
- Block users who make you uncomfortable — you never need to justify this decision.
- If you feel you are in immediate danger, contact the South African Police Service (SAPS) at 10111.

Common Online Dating Scams
Awareness is your best defence. Here are common scams to watch out for:
Romance Scams
Someone builds an emotional connection then asks for money, often claiming a medical emergency, travel costs, or business investment. They may use stolen photos and create elaborate backstories.
Catfishing
Using fake photos, a fabricated identity, or significantly misrepresenting themselves. Watch for profiles with only professional/model-quality photos or people who avoid video calls.
Advance Fee Fraud
Claiming they need money upfront for a visa, flight, customs fee, or legal matter before they can meet you. Legitimate matches will never ask you for money.
Phishing Attempts
Sending links that appear to be from Desi Connect or other services but are designed to steal your login credentials or personal information.
